Perry-Mansfield scholarships will be awarded to local youth STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO— The Colorado Group Realty Charitable Foundation and the Sheila M. Cook Community Arts Foundation and have created a youth scholarship for the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp. Routt County youth, entering grades 5 – 7 will be awarded full scholarships to attend Perry-Mansfield’s Junior Camp, June 25th – July 10th, 2010. Junior Camp is a two- week program designed for the younger student who wants to explore the performing arts. The program offers a well-rounded curriculum that includes required classes in dance, theater and musical theater, with electives in art, creative writing and equestrian. All eligible youth must complete the Junior Camp Scholarship Auditions at Perry-Mansfield. Sheila M. Cook was a childhood dancer and had a deep love of dance and the theatre. She enjoyed the dance recitals at Perry-Mansfield. Sheila felt that the performing arts encouraged the creativity of young people and added a certain discipline that could not be duplicated in the home. With her passing, a fund was established for Community Arts specific to the downtown Steamboat Springs area and Perry-Mansfield. The Colorado Group Realty Charitable Foundation was established in 2006 in order to provide a means to give back to the community. In addition to donations made at the time of real estate transactions, employees, managers and matching funds from client and public donations, can also contribute to the foundation. The goal of the Charitable Foundation is to support a wide range of community based programs related to human services, the arts, education, western heritage, the environment and recreation. In 1913, Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield fulfilled their dreams of creating a theatre and dance camp in the mountains. Now, over ninety-six years later, Perry-Mansfield is recognized as the oldest continuously operating performing arts school and camp in the nation. Throughout the years, a number of distinguished alumni, faculty, and guest artists have passed through the doors of Perry-Mansfield. It is the desire of the benefactors to open up opportunities to the youth of Steamboat Springs and Routt County, who might not otherwise be able to attend. With the anticipated success of this scholarship, it is the hope of the benefactors that the scholarship will be offered on an annual basis.
